Toledo

En el siglo XV sufrió una modificacion notable. El Sr. de Layos y de Mora, D. Francisco de Rojas, embajador de los Reyes Católicos en Roma y cerca del Emperador Maximiliano I, levantó completamente de nuevo y conforme al estilo ojival en su tercer periodo, la suntuosa capilla mayor y el crucero que aun subsiste.

Una leyenda en caractéres góticos, que corre por el friso de los muros de esta parte del templo, esplica el objeto de esta piadosa fundacion de la manera siguiente:

EL MUY NOBLE CABALLERO DON FRANCISCO DE ROJAS MANDÓ FUNDAR Y DOTAR ESTA CAPILLA CON MUY GRANDES INDULGENCIAS, PARA REPOSO DE SUS PADRES É PARIENTES Y SALVACIÓN DE TODOS LOS FIELES CRISTIANOS: ESTANDO EN ROMA POR EMBAJADOR DE LOS MUY CATÓLICOS REYES DON FERNANDO É DOÑA ISABEL, REY É REINA DE LAS ESPAÑAS Y DE NÁPOLES É DE SICILIA NEGOCIANDO ENTRE OTROS MUY ÁRDUOS NEGOCIOS DE SUS MAGESTADES LA EMPRESA É CONQUISTA DEL REINO DE NÁPOLES É JERUSALEN, LA CUAL É TODAS LAS VICTORIAS DE ELLA, PLUGO AL SERVICIO DE LA SANTA TRINIDAD Y DE LA GLORIOSÍSIMA VÍRGEN SANTA MARIA NUESTRA SEÑORA Y DE TODOS LOS SANTOS.
