The Wild Robot Protects
The Wild Robot Protects Once inside, Roz ventured into the operations control room. Monitors displayed security feeds of vast fields of toxic dust, while one screen revealed the relentless flow of chemical clouds rising from the depths. It became clear to Roz that the giant mining robot far below was the true source of the poison tide. She knew she had to stop it.
Just then, the hum of an elevator broke the silence. Acting quickly, Roz hid beneath a table. A woman, identified by a monitor as Akiko Fuji, the station’s manager, stepped out of the elevator and sat before the screens. Roz watched and listened intently as Akiko spoke with a tone of exhaustion and resignation during a call, explaining the importance of the mining operation for manufacturing more robots like Roz.
The revelation hit Roz like a blow—a bitter irony that the operation threatening to destroy her home existed to create machines like herself. Her mind processed the cruel twist: the very thing she sought to protect was being endangered in the name of her own creation.
Steeling herself, Roz emerged from her hiding spot, stepping into the open to face Akiko and her team.
“My name is Roz,” she announced. “I come from an island to the south. The animals call it the poison tide, and it’s killing the ocean. I have come here to stop it.”
