Onyx Storm (The Empyrean, 3)
Onyx Storm (The Empyrean, 3) "No!" Violet stepped forward until she stood face to face with him, fists clenched at her sides. She could feel the weight of the night looming over them, as if the world itself dared them to take a misstep.
"You do not understand, Violet," Xaden raised the object he held: a fragment of onyx, polished and gleaming, seemingly pulsating with a dark power. His voice grew lower, more tense. "This... can change everything. But not without a price."
"There is always a price," she said. She sought his gaze, trying to find in him the man she knew, the man who would not allow the shadows to consume him. But all she saw was an unyielding resolve.
The wind swirled around him, and for a moment, it seemed as if the world stood still. Xaden took a step back, as if on the verge of vanishing into the night.
"Then you shall not deter me," he declared.
Violet closed her eyes, seeking the bond with her dragon, Tairn, as her mind filled with a single truth: no matter what he believed, she would not let him fall.
"I will not do it. But if you cross that line, Xaden, I will do it with you."
His words hung in the air, and for a moment, something in Xaden's gaze softened. Yet the decision had already been made.
