Fifth Part: Red Snow

The roque mallet struck the door with a dull crack.

—Wendy, open up!

Jack roared from the other side.

—Come on, honey. Let’s talk like a damn family!

Another blow. The wood splintered slightly.

Wendy backed away, clutching Danny tightly. No way out. No way out.

Her thoughts spun like a tornado.

Could she convince him? Tell him everything was fine? That she still loved him?

She looked at her son.

No. That wasn’t Jack.

It was something else. Something wearing his skin.

—Mommy… —Danny whispered.

Wendy knelt down and looked him in the eyes.

—Listen to me, Doc. If you get the chance… run. Do you understand?

Danny shook his head.
