Hallorann spat blood and looked up.
—The hotel doesn’t need you, Jack. It’s using you.
Jack laughed.
—And so what? I was never anybody. Never enough. But now… now I’m part of something bigger.
He raised the mallet.
Hallorann rolled to the side just before the wood smashed into the floor.
He pushed himself up as best he could and ran.
Behind him, Jack panted with fury.
—COME BACK HERE!
The hotel roared with him.
Danny Runs
Danny was hiding in the pantry.
He could hear the blows, the screams, his mother’s ragged breathing.
And then, he felt it.
The Overlook opened its eyes.
It saw him.
It felt him.
And it spoke to him.
—Danny… —the hotel whispered in his mind, with overlapping voices, echoes of other lives and other deaths—. Stay with us.
Danny clenched his eyes shut.
—No.
