The Shining
The Shining But Wendy noticed. She noticed because she had learned to read her son’s silences.
Later, in the kitchen, Dick Hallorann, the cook, appeared. A burly man with dark skin and watchful eyes. He smiled at Danny in a different way, as if he knew something no one else did.
—You and I have a gift, little one —Hallorann said softly.
Danny looked at him curiously.
—You call it the shining, don’t you? —the cook continued.
Danny shivered. No one had ever said that word out loud.
—What is it?
—It’s seeing things others can’t. Hearing thoughts. Sensing what’s about to happen. —Hallorann held his gaze seriously. —But listen, boy. If you ever see something in this hotel… something bad… run. Don’t go into Room 217.
Danny swallowed hard.
The Overlook breathed.

Wendy hugged herself as she stared out the window.
—God, Jack… We’re alone.
