The Last Chairlift tells the life and family of Adam Brewster, an American writer who was born in 1941 in Aspen, Colorado, the result of an unwanted pregnancy by his mother, Rachel Brewster, a professional skier. Rachel, nicknamed Little Ray, never revealed to Adam who her biological father was, but she gave him an unconventional and loving family. Along with Molly, her lesbian partner, and Mr Barlow, her transgender husband, Little Ray raised Adam in a small New England town, where he had to face prejudice and the gaze of a conservative society.
Adam grew up surrounded by unforgettable characters: his grandparents, his aunts, uncles, and his troubled girlfriends. He also got to know the world of wrestling, cinema and literature. But he always felt the need to know more about his origin and his past. So, years later, he returned to Aspen, to the Hotel Jerome, where he was conceived. There he met some ghosts who revealed secrets to him and showed him another perspective on his story.
