The Devil in the White City
Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America
Vistas: 420
Do you enjoy reading historical thrillers that combine real events and characters with fictional ones? If so, you might be interested in The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, a bestselling book that tells the story of two men, an architect and a serial killer, operating in Chicago during the 1890s.
The book uses extensive research to recreate the lives of these two real men and to reinvent Chicago during the Worlds Columbian Exposition, also known as the Worlds Fair, which was designed to commemorate the landing of Columbus in America¹². The book has two separate, yet connected plot lines and attempts to fill in some of the gaps left by history¹.
One plot line follows Daniel Burnham, the lead architect and Director of Works for the Worlds Fair, who faces many challenges and obstacles in designing and building the Fair on a tight deadline and budget. He has to deal with labor unrest, political corruption, natural disasters, and personal tragedies, while also trying to create a masterpiece that will showcase Chicagos culture and innovation.
The other plot line follows H. H. Holmes, a young doctor who arrives in Chicago and opens a hotel near the Fair grounds. He uses his charm and charisma to lure unsuspecting guests, mostly young women, into his hotel, which is actually a torture chamber full of traps, gas jets, vaults, and a secret basement. He kills his victims in gruesome ways and disposes of their bodies in a furnace or sells them to medical schools. He is considered to be one of Americas first known serial killers.
The book alternates between these two stories, creating a contrast between the light and the dark aspects of Chicago at that time. It also explores themes such as ambition, deception, beauty, evil, and human nature. The book is full of fascinating details and anecdotes that bring the historical setting to life. It is a captivating and suspenseful read that will keep you hooked until the end.
