Dannie Kohan is a successful corporate lawyer living in Manhattan in December 2020. She has a banker boyfriend, David, who proposes to her after she lands her dream job at a prestigious law firm. That night, Dannie dreams of a vision of herself five years in the future, on December 15, 2025. She is in an apartment in Brooklyn that she does not recognize and is engaged to a man, Aaron, that she has never met before. . She feels something overwhelming towards him, and Dannie realizes that she loves this man. They have sex. When she wakes up, Dannie is back in 2020.

Dannie starts her new job. Life goes on, although the dream remains in her mind. In June 2025, David now works at a hedge fund, Dannie is about to become a partner at the firm, and her lifelong best friend, Bella, owns a gallery. However, David and Dannie remain unmarried. And when Bella introduces Dannie to her new love, Dannie recognizes that its Aaron from the dream. Also, when Aaron shows Dannie the apartment in Brooklyn that he and Bella are thinking of buying, she Dannie recognizes it as the one from the dream, even though she needs a renovation.

Scared to let her dream come true, Dannie tells David that shes ready to get married. They decide to do it in December and start planning it. Meanwhile, Bella and Aaron get serious. One day at the beach, Dannie and Aaron share a moment, but then Bella discovers that she is pregnant. Aaron is delighted. Dannie moves in with Bella, though she is getting weaker from chemotherapy. December 15 rolls around and Dannie has a date with Aaron to talk about Bella. He tells her that Bella wants to see her happy and asks her to stay with him that night. Dannie agrees and realizes that it is the same night as the dream. However, this time there is no passion or love between them, only sadness and comfort.

The next morning, Dannie gets a call from the hospital: Bella has died. Dannie is devastated and blames Aaron for taking her away from her friend in her last few hours. She returns to Bellas empty apartment and finds a letter that she left for her before she died. In it, Bella tells him that she knows about Dannies dream and that she made it possible to give him a gift: the chance to see what she really wants in her life.

Dannie then understands that the dream was not a prophecy but a guide. She realizes that what she felt for Aaron was just a reflection of the love she felt for Bella. She also realizes that David was not the right man for her and that she needs to find her own happiness. She decides to quit her job and move to Los Angeles, where she always wanted to live. There, she meets a man named Greg, who she likes and makes her laugh. She tells him her story and he kisses her. She feels that she is starting a new life.
