Have you ever felt alone and abandoned by the world? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in the wild, far from civilization and the judgment of others?
If so, perhaps you identify with the protagonist of Where the Crawdads Sing, a novel by Delia Owens that tells the story of Kya Clark, a young woman who lives alone in the swamps of North Carolina.
Kya is a six-year-old girl when she watches her mother leave forever, leaving her with her violent and alcoholic father and her older siblings. One by one, her siblings leave as well, until Kya is left alone with her father, who soon disappears as well. With no money or family, Kya survives by farming and selling mussels and smoked fish to Jumpin, a black man who runs a gas station on the pier. Jumpin and his wife Mabel become lifelong friends with Kya, getting him donated clothes from her.
As Ella Kya grows older, she faces prejudice from the townspeople of Barkley Cove, who nickname her The Swamp Girl. She is mocked and scorned by the kids at school the one day she attends, and she is called dirty and gross by the pastors wife. However, she befriends Tate Walker, an old friend of Jodies who sometimes fishes in the bayou. One day, Ella Kya gets lost and Tate takes her home on her boat. Years later, he leaves her rare bird feathers, and later teaches her to read and write. The two form a romantic relationship until Tate leaves for college. He promises to come back, but then realizes that she Kya cannot live in her more civilized world because of how wild and independent she is from her, and leaves her without saying goodbye to her.
The novel alternates between Kyas childhood and adulthood, and an investigation into the apparent murder of Chase Andrews, a popular young man from the town who dies in 1969 when he falls from a fire tower in the swamp. Sheriff Ed Jackson suspects that Chase was murdered and begins to investigate Kya, as she and Chase had a secret relationship in the bayou until shortly before Chase married a local girl named Pearl.
Where the Crawdads Sing is a fascinating novel about the resilience of a young woman who is cut off from the world. It is a novel that can be read by all ages and will capture the heart and mind of the reader. It is a novel of hope, resilience, and the power of the human spirit.
